BEDDIS HITS BUZZER BEATER TO PUSH WEST POTOMAC INTO THE REGIONAL FINALS

2/27/25 – West Potomac’s Abigail Beddis hit a buzzer beater to win the game against South County High School in a Regional Semi-Final game. It was a shot all kids dream about.

Beddis’s shot came at a time when West Potomac High School, with the score tied, was trying to hold onto the ball during the last 45 seconds to take the last shot. But they had a hard time controlling the ball and they were forced to take a time out to regroup. The winning shot was ironic because last week South County beat West Potomac on their own buzzer beater. But tonight was West Potomac’s turn.

Lost in the heroics of Beddis was the spectacular play of her teammate and Gettysburg College commit, Olivia Jones, who ended up with 18 points. Jones calmly led her team’s offense all night. She was so calm that she barely showed a smile when she hit a half-court shot just before halftime. As her teammates were jumping up and down, Jones simply walked off the court to the locker room as if nothing special happened.

The game was close all night. South County started to move ahead in the second quarter, as their zone defense prevented West Potomac from getting any good shots. In fact, West Potomac only scored two points in the first seven and one-half minutes of the second quarter and was down 20-14. But Beddis hit a 3 pointer with 15 seconds to go and then Jones hit her half-court shot to tie the game, 20-20.

In the second half, Jones scored the first seven points for West Potomac. But Peyton Baines Trapp and Juelle Lisenby each made a 3-pointer for South County and South County took a 2 point lead at the end of the third quarter.

With the score tied in the fourth quarter with about a minute to play, West Potomac stole the ball which eventually led to the game winning shot by Beddis.

Beddis and Jones were not the only players who contributed to their victory tonight. Starting sophomore center Lina Hashimi scored eight points in the first quarter and ended the game with 10 points. Delores Harkless played stellar defense on South County’s best players. Jill Humphreys was aggressive all night and Dawn Houston played well and hit a big jumper in the third quarter.

South County, which finished the season with a record of 21-5, was led by Laila Tull with 12 points; Makyah Mason with 10 points; and Juelle Lisenby with 8 points.

West Potomac moves to the Regional Finals against Robinson Secondary School on Friday at 6 pm at Hayfield High School.
