1/17/26 — Hayfield Secondary School overcame an early deficit to defeat Woodgrove High School, 52–47, in a tightly contested matchup at the St. James 2026 MLK Classic. Senior Madison Davis earned Most Valuable Player honors after finishing with 13 points.
The victory was a complete team effort for the Hawks. Davis not only scored 13 points but was dominant on the boards, particularly on the offensive glass. Eva Phillips continued her strong shooting, knocking down three three-pointers and leading Hayfield with 14 points. Mariah Overton had a solid game knocking down 12 points, while Alexis Cox shook off a slow start to score eight points in the fourth quarter, including a perfectly timed pass to Davis for a key basket.
The game remained close throughout. Woodgrove held a two-point lead at halftime, but Hayfield took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines by five to carry a three-point advantage into the final period.
Woodgrove kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter behind the steady play of point guard Mya Bundick, who made clutch play after clutch play throughout the night. Bundick finished with a game-high 18 points, while teammate May Marsh added 13.
Hayfield’s balanced scoring and strong rebounding ultimately proved to be the difference as the Hawks closed out the win.
