HAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOL OUTLASTS THOMAS EDISON HIGH SCHOOL BEFORE A PACKED CROWD
2/7/25 – In an exciting back and forth game in front of a packed and boisterous crowd, the Hayfield Hawks defeated the Thomas Edison Eagles, 51-43, on Edison’s home court.
The game did not start close – Hayfield’s Eva Phillips exploded for the first six points of the game as Hayfield went up 8-0, until Sarah Chawki finally put Edison on the board. Phillips scored eight points in the quarter and Edison’s freshman, Giselle Hunter scored 6 points.
Hayfield’s 2-3 zone was giving Edison difficulty during the entire first half. And that is no surprise considering Hayfield’s back three players are all close to 6 feet tall, much taller than Edison. Edison had a hard time penetrating the zone and got very few open looks. Chawki, who often drove to the basket, had difficulty finishing her shots against Hayfield’s much taller players. But Chawki was clever enough to draw some fouls and knocked down five free throws in the quarter to keep Edison in the game.
Although Hayfield was only up by seven points at halftime, it looked like Hayfield's zone defense would be too much for Edison to come back.
But Edison went on its own eight point run at the beginning of the third quarter to take its first lead, with Kennedy Marshall leading the way with two baskets and a foul shot. With Hayfield down by one point, Alexis Cox put Hayfield back on top with a driving layup. The third quarter ended with Hayfield up by 2.
The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter until Cox hit a big three pointer to put Hayfield on top 42-39, and Hayfield never relinquished the lead. Cox scored five points in the quarter and her teammate Madison Davis contributed four points to seal the victory for the Hawks.
Hayfield was led by Phillips, who scored 13 points and Cox who scored 10 points. Shannon Heiner scored 11 points for Edison and Hunter scored 9 points.
