Hayfield High School Easily Defeats Mount Vernon
1/8/26 – This was an old-fashioned blow out.
The Hayfield Hawks opened the game with a dominant 17-0 run and cruised to an 86-20 victory over the Mount Vernon Majors. Applying relentless full-court man-to-man defense led by Mariah Overton, Hayfield put the game out of reach with the first four minutes.
But things would get even worse for the Majors. Hayfield’s star play, Alexis Cox, was not even on the court. Missing from pre-game warm-ups and absent from the bench in the first quarter, Cox mysteriously entered the game with four minutes left in the second quarter. Cox quickly scored two baskets – including a three-pointer – as the Hawks took a commanding 47-14 lead into halftime.
Hayfield continued to overwhelm Mount Vernon in the third quarter, outscoring the Majors 26-2 to extend the lead to 73-16.
Overton and her teammate, Sabila Kamara each finished with 21 points. Mount Vernon was led by Jada Curry, who scored nine points. .
