Centreville Cruises Past Oakton
2/6/25 - In a competitive game, the Centreville High School Wildcats defeated the Oakton High School Cougars, 60-50.
One way to beat Oakton is to shut down one of their two big scorers – Sophie Toole or Brooke Chang. Tonight, Centreville’s Kennedy Parrott, a Colgate commit, was assigned the task of defending Toole - and Parrott, a very athletic and agile defender, did not disappoint. Parrott hounded Toole all night and forced her into taking many difficult and off-balance shots. To her credit, although Toole appeared to get frustrated as the night wore on, Toole never gave up and kept aggressively attacking the basket over and over again, even driving full court to the basket in the last ten seconds of the game.
Centreville took the lead early in the game and gradually increased it over the course of the night. Centreville’s Daniela Cuellar scored 13 points in the first half while hitting three 3-pointers. Parrott scored 8 points off of various mid-range shots and drives to the basket. Oakton’s Chang single-handedly kept the game close by scoring 11 points in the half. Centreville led at halftime 28-20.
Centreville extended its lead in the third quarter outscoring Oakton, 20-12. Centreville’s Claire Kang knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 8 points in the quarter while Oakton’s Chang continued her scoring by dropping in 5 more points. Centreville led at the end of the third quarter by 16 points.
Oakton’s Jocelynn Kinlaw scored eight points in the fourth quarter, and Chang contribute another 5 points to help Oakton outscore Centreville, 18-12. But that was not enough to overcome Centreville’s lead.
Centreville ended up with balanced scoring, with Parrott scoring 17 points; Cuellar, 15 points; Malia Siriwardene, 10 points and Molly Veley, 9 points. Oakton was led by Chang with 21 points; Kinlaw, 11 points and Toole, 9 points.
