1/14/25 – Thanks to a lethal backcourt and cohesive offense, the Bishop Ireton High School Cardinals – a stacked Alexandria, VA team with four college commits – defeated the St. Mary's Ryken High School Knights, 76-50.

Bishop Ireton began with a press in the first quarter, creating trouble for St. Mary’s early into the game. Theresa Hagans, the Cardinals’ senior point guard and University of Pittsburgh commit, left the game within the first couple minutes due to injury. Fortunately for her team, senior guard duo Amirah Anderson and Nyla Brooks were easily able to help Bishop Ireton stay consistent on offense. The score at halftime was 46-22.

Throughout the rest of the game, Bishop Ireton maintained its lead over St. Mary’s. Brooks, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill commit, made her presence known through her athleticism, 6’2” lengthy stature, and ability to knock down tough shots. She led her team with 25 points.

Anderson, a Boston College commit, showed off her composure and strong basketball fundamentals, knocking down mid-range shots and threes, and making the right passes. Prior to tipoff, Anderson celebrated surpassing 1,000 career points. She finished the game with 22 points.

Bishop Ireton’s 6’0” sophomore Geornae Davis also contributed with 10 points and Kayla Washington, a Longwood University commit, added 9 points.

St. Mary’s senior guard Sydney Thompson led her team with 24 points, primarily through drives getting her to the free throw line and by knocking down a few threes. Freshman point guard Aaliyah Harris, who is likely to be a prime player for the future of St. Mary’s basketball program, scored 10 points; 6’0” senior Vilte Kacerauskaite drained two threes and a double for a total of 8 points; and 5’10” sophomore Jaela Fair added 7 points.
