WAGENER AND SHAPIRO LEAD WASHINGTON-LIBERTY PAST MCLEAN HIGH SCHOOL
1/31/25 – The Washington-Liberty High School Generals defeated the McLean High School Highlanders tonight, 40-26.
After a close first half, Washington-Liberty pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Highlanders 13-4. Sophomore Kathryn Wagener and senior Frances Shapiro led the way scoring 8 points, and 4 points, respectively, in the quarter.
Wagener had numerous steals all night which led to some fast break baskets.
McLean tried to rally in the fourth quarter but Shapiro knocked down 6 free throws to keep Washington-Liberty in the lead.
Washington-Liberty freshman Anna Jungman played most of the game and although she only ended up with four points tonight, she was a big factor. Jungman was aggressive all night – driving to the basket, battling for rebounds, and even set a hard pick on McLean’s star Tatum Olson which threw Olson to the floor. On one play in the second quarter, Jungman had the ball in the right corner and one of her teammates ran around her to get the ball. Instead of handing off the ball to her teammate, Jungman faked a handoff and then stormed the basket. Unfortunately, she missed the contested layup but it is obvious that Jungman will be a big factor for Washington-Liberty for years to come. She gets to play along side her older sister, junior center Emilia Aleksic, who, although somewhat quiet today, has been a big factor for Washington-Liberty this season.
Wagener led all scorers with 15 points and her teammate, Shapiro had 14 points. Emory University bound, Olson, led McLean with 12 points.
