WEST POTOMAC DOMINATES ALEXANDRIA CITY - BUT BIG TEST IS NEAR
2/3/25 – West Potomac High School has five more regular season games left, and let’s be realistic, they are going to easily win the next four games. Yes, it is theoretically possible that one of its next four opponents, South County High School, could beat West Potomac, but it is highly unlikely. The main test left for West Potomac is to see if they could win the fifth game – and avenge their only loss of the season - against Robinson Secondary School on February 14th.
West Potomac is a good team. It has depth and it has at least six players who are good three-point shooters. Additionally, they run well and they don’t make many silly mistakes. But they have not had the hardest schedule and they are not battle tested. It is true that they beat two good teams, Langley High School and Gainesville High School over a month ago. But, in their biggest test, they recently lost to their conference rival, Robinson, 50-47. And the game was not as close as the score might suggest.
But there are 11 days until the Robinson game.
Until then, there will be games like tonight - an easy victory for West Potomac. A minute or two after the start of the game, they put on a full court press and Alexandria City started to turn the ball over – and over. Alexandria City simply did not have the talent that West Potomac had and trailed after the first quarter 18-2. It would have been worse if West Potomac would have made its three pointers – but thankfully for Alexandria City, their three pointers were not falling.
The second quarter got worse for Alexandria City. Abigail Beddis scored eight points in the quarter and Pietrina Copty, who is an impressive sophomore, had five points. Alexandria City was outscored 24-2 in the quarter and West Potomac led at halftime 42-4.
Even with the West Potomac starters playing limited minutes in the second half, West Potomac extended its lead and won, 58-17.
Beddis was the high scorer for West Potomac with 19 points, and her teammates Copty and freshman Skylar Strother added nine points and eight points, respectively. Kaitlyn Marshall had nine points for Alexandria City.
