CHAWKI SCORES HER 1,000TH CAREER POINT IN EDISON’S WIN OVER THOMAS JEFFERSON
2/19/2025 - Thomas A. Edison High School defeated Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, 54-45, in a district semi-final game at Edison High School.
Sarah Chawki scored the first basket for Edison by running her defender off of a high screen and then receiving a lob pass from her teammate for an easy basket. It was the exact same play she used to score Edison’s first basket in the last game between these two teams a few weeks ago.
But the highlight for Chawki, Edison's crafty guard, was scoring her 1,000th career point on a drive to the basket in the second quarter. She ran the show in the first half scoring 13 points and efficiently running her team’s offense.
But Thomas Jefferson came to play tonight. Seniors Kaiden Kerkulah and Abigail Lee each scored 9 points in the first half. Thomas Jefferson was only down by two points at halftime
In the third quarter, Edison started out on an 8-0 run and closed the quarter with a 3-pointer buried by Shannon Heiner as time ran out to give her team a 45-31 lead. Edison outscored Thomas Jefferson 16-4 in the quarter. Edison’s Regan Kauffman and DaLana Massey-Thompson scored 7 points and 6 points in the quarter, respectively.
Kerkulah, a very physical player, was a dominant presence tonight and continuously used her strength in barrelling to the basket and posting down low. Kerkulah single-handedly kept Thomas Jefferson in the game throughout the night.
Edison did not score for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and Thomas Jefferson cut the lead down to 4 points with about 3 minutes remaining. But Edison was able to knock down nine free throws in the quarter to keep Thomas Jefferson from getting any closer.
Edison had balanced scoring with Chawki, 15 points; Heiner, 12 points; Massey-Thompson, 10 points; and Kennedy Marshall, 9 points. Kerkulah had 19 points and Lee had 13 points for Thomas Jefferson.
Edison now moves to the district final game on Friday night.
