1/24/25 - From the opening tipoff, Thomas A. Edison High School successfully executed its offense to defeat Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, 59-40.

On Edison’s first possession, senior Sarah Chawki ran her defender off of a high screen and received a lop pass from teammate Kennedy Marshall for the game’s first basket. Edison efficiently executed its offense all night long and never trailed. Edison was ahead 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

DaLana Massey-Thompson dominated the first few minutes of the second quarter by scoring off of low post moves and simple cuts. She scored 7 points in the quarter. Jefferson’s Kaiden Kerkulah, clearly the most physical player on the court, kept the game close and also scored 7 points in the quarter. Midway through the quarter, Jefferson scored a handful of buckets off of its press and fast breaks but trailed at halftime 28-18.

The third quarter was all Chawki. Edison’s Chawki, a player always fun to watch, took over the game. She consistently beat the press, forced jump balls and took an offensive foul in route to a 10 point third quarter outburst. She capped off the quarter with a beautiful bounce pass from half court to teammate Avery King for a lay-up, putting Edison up by 11 points.

Edison outscored Jefferson 14-6 in the final quarter. Shannon Heiner put up seven points in the quarter and her teammate Marshall added 5 points. Freshman Giselle Hunter scored two points on a strong drive to the basket.

Edison ended up with balanced scoring with Marshall having 17 points; Heiner, 13 points, Chawki, 12 points; and Massey-Thompson with 9 points. Kerkulah scored 20 points for Jefferson.

Chawki left the game with 2 minutes remaining with a sprained ankle.

Prior to the game, Edison celebrated their coach, Dianne Lewis, who recently coached Edison to her 500th career victory. A banner was placed in the school gym recognizing this remarkable achievement.
