1/2/25 - Juniors Sophie Toole and Brooke Chang each scored 21 points to lead Oakton over South County High School, 60-39. After cruising to three easy victories in its holiday tournament last weekend, Oakton was expecting a tougher game from South County which came into the contest with a 7-1 record.

South County started the game making numerous turnovers and Oakton capitalized on that and took a 17-6 lead after the first quarter. Things changed in the second quarter when South County came out playing aggressive defense and scored a few baskets on fast breaks to cut the lead to 2 points. But that would be the end of South County’s rally and Oakton finished the quarter with a flurry and took a 31-19 halftime lead.

Oakton’s coach, Fred Priester must have said something to motivate his team at halftime because the third quarter was all Oakton. Oakton went on a 17-2 tear in the third quarter and the game became out of reach for South County.

Although South County aggressively drove to the basket throughout the game, they had a difficult time finishing on their drives. And they were no match for Oakton’s outside shooting. Oakton had six 3-pointers during the first three quarters while South County did not have any.

Oakton sophomore center, Jocelynn Kinlaw had a strong game and finished with 9 points. Laila Tull and Natalya Wooten were the high scorers for South County with 10 points each.
